Medical doctor hopes Jesus guides his decisions WTF

While taking someone to a local doctor’s office here in Tennessee I was practically floored by seeing the large framed print below hanging in the center of the largest wall.

print of a doctor with jesus over his shoulder guiding him in making a diagnosis on a tough case

In the caption of the picture it says “The Difficult Case” and the illustration clearly shows “Jesus” guiding the doctor to try to find the answer to the medical problem he is trying to solve.  Of course the doctor had his bible next to him as well.

First of all I am thankful this is not my doctor flaunting their irrational beliefs in their waiting room.   This is very tacky for any business like the sign on the garage I saw in Alabama to post on it’s walls.  Anyone with sense would be very disturbed that this doctor, instead of relying on his medical education and experience, hopes that some magical entity would help them perform his doctor’s duties.  However here in the bible belt, people with little sense is far to common, and many visitors would like this painting and prefer this doctor for proudly expressing his beliefs.  Perhaps this doctor is not a fool but rather a smart business man,  either way I wouldn’t risk my health.

Wow – look how lilly white Jesus is LMAO. It’s just hilarious how southeastern U.S. Christians, with all their inborn bigotry, depict “the lord” as a white guy from Europe.

This need to sweep under the rug the undoubtedly Arabic heritage of Jesus (had he ever existed in the first place) is just another subtle irony in the whole debacle.

Great blog by the way. I don’t know if I qualify as an atheist as, frankly, everyone I speak to has a different interpretation on what that means. But I’m DEFINITELY into speaking out against religious intolerance and cult brainwashing. I also live in TN (northeast corner) and I commend you for publishing this blog proudly as a homegrown effort to thwart regional zealotry.

Is it just me, or does that doctor resemble Hitler? Darken the hair, narrow that mustache… yup.

Yep I would totally agree with this picture. He helped my husband heal me and get the correct medicine for my body. No one else could do it but because my husband is the only one I trusted he did use him as this is what I prayed for. (by the way my hubby is not a Doctor). My husband was a non-believer two years ago and now loves God with all his heart and cannot believe he did not see his hand in things previously.

Natural things which can’t not be seen with the human eye, yet you believe in these…
Air, gravity, time, viruses bacteria, atoms, wind, radiation, mitochondria and chloroplasts, telekinesis, magnetic fields, electricity, prokaryotic cells so if all these have existed long before you ever believe in them…why is it so unreasonable to believe in a Sovereign Supernatural being…God?

I think that this is a beautiful picture. My doctor is a devout Christian and I trust his medical advice fully. I will pray for you.

@SAPPHIRE Uh, go tell that to the millions of Christians “bashing” anyone and everyone who doesn’t fit their mold. Perhaps when the perpetrators of the bashing dose up on their own medicine, the rest of us will not have to toss the garbage back into their yards.

@Krista Pray for yourself. Folded hands touting prayer are idle hands doing nothing. I’m sick of those touting that they will pray for this, or that, when it’s nothing more than an excuse for “doing nothing” and/or causing strife for those who do not believe in god/s.

    Keep it sister.

You would understand the meaning of the picture better if you were a Medical Doctor.

As a surgeon, I can say this. If you (i.e. TN Atheist) think that all medical answers come from textbooks and medical knowledge, you have a very rude surprise waiting in your future as you grow older. I would estimate that about 25-30% of what is done in medicine is based on any kind of actual evidence. So a physician praying for guidance or help is not only comforting for many, but in reality is perfectly rational and sensible given that the answers to many medical problems remain a mystery for patients for years. Doctors are not robots, nor are patients. We all have beliefs and principles that guide us that we bring to the table. As a christian physician, while I would never throw my beliefs in someones face, I take great insult to your insinuation that a doctor who prays for guidance is somehow a lesser doctor. Give me a break and get off your high horse.
