TN Church Members Carry Handguns to Worship Services

Of course in Tennessee there’s a news story about Christians going armed to church with handguns to “protect God’s people”.

Duane McGray takes his Bible to church on Sunday mornings.

He also takes his gun.

McGray, a former chief of public safety at Nashville International Airport, is a volunteer in the security ministry at First Baptist Church Hendersonville. He carries a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun to worship services to keep members and visitors safe.

“I have no problem in carrying a firearm in church,” he said. “I just know that it is necessary to protect God’s people.”

Safety has been on the minds of many local congregations recently, after a Southern Baptist pastor was gunned down in an Illinois pulpit during church services on March 8. Some local churches already rely on armed volunteers and off-duty police officers, while others say recent church shootings have made them realize they should be prepared, in case the unthinkable happens.

Only in a bible belt state like TN do Christians arm themselves to go to church.  It is very hypocritical of a Christian to say there god is all powerful and protects them because they are believers but fill it is necessary to bring a firearm for protection while worshiping this god at church.   One would think a christian that truly believed in the dogma would not feel it necessary to pack heat to church.

image of jesus showing a child a handgunNow don’t get me wrong, I love the right to bear arms.  I have several weapons myself and would definitely go to a church service armed for protection from christians.  Not sure if its just a southern thing but we southerners especially love our firearms.

The overall article is a good example of how christians feel they are in danger from nonbeliever because they are persecuted for their beliefs.  However from the stories on church shooting I read its usually christians and former members of the church that are doing the shooting.  Its amusing how they don’t go into details on the security to keep it hush hush from all those that are out to get them.

I especially enjoyed the quote from the sheriff at the end of the article, “The more time goes by, the more people will die”.  What a keen observation.

You’re missing the point, and misrepresenting the Christian position.

First, I’m from NH, and we carry in church there. I had never heard of anyone being unhappy about that until I arrived in the South.

Second, a belief in God’s sovereignty does not excuse one from being responsible and taking precautions; no Christian with a clear understanding of sovereignty would excuse irresponsible behavior (ie. not carrying) by referencing God’s sovereignty.

Finally, I’ve never met a Christian who felt persecuted here in the US. I carry at church for the same reason I carry at Wal-Mart: for self defense. I’m not worried about religious persecution, I’m simply aware that there are a few sociopaths out there who would like to take as many people with them as possible. I’d rather not be killed if I can help it, be it while shopping or worshiping.

Remember that Jesus told his followers to take up their swords. A sword would have been the very real equivalent of a gun in today’s terms. There’s simply no way to avoid seeing the functionality as anything but roughly equal.

Jesus was not opposed to the sword being carried and used, but was well aware of what effect it had and that, as Jesus stated, he who lives by the sword will die by the sword. It’s natural that if you arm and defend yourself, be prepared for others to “raise the stakes” and meet you with force, whether rightfully or wrongfully.

If you are opposed to the owning of firearms by civilians, you will misinterpret and judge those who carry. If you honor the Constitution of the United States and defend the right to bear arms, you will not unfairly judge those who carry. As long as it remains a part of the Constitution, it is truly and unquestionably wrong to be opposed to the lawful carry of firearms.

Pardon me sir, But I AM NOT and Atheist. But I just wanted to say: First of all, carrying a gun in church is NOT distrust in God, but rather if God wants me to defend myself I better use the best tool possible.
