Religion is on the Decline in the US

March 14th, 2009

And the survey says……Religion is going down.

A wide-ranging study on American religious life found that the Roman Catholic population has been shifting out of the Northeast to the Southwest, the percentage of Christians in the nation has declined and more people say they have no religion at all.

Fifteen percent of respondents said they had no religion, an increase from 14.2 percent in 2001 and 8.2 percent in 1990, according to the American Religious Identification Survey.

Its always great to hear that Christianity is on the decline and people claiming to have no religion is on the rise.  This new study also supports earlier surveys that showed non-religious people are such a large portion of the population and of course on the rise.  I believe a lot of this has to do with non-believers not feeling as isolated as they once were and that it is becoming more of an accepted viewpoint in the nation as a whole.

I only wish the Christians here in Tennessee and the rest of the bible belt would realize how large the numbers are and at least tolerate us non-believers as much as they do Muslims and Jews.  Well at least things are getting better in the nation as a whole.   Hopefully we atheists and other non-religious people will continue to band together and let our voices be heard and change this country for the better.
