Child Rape Victim’s Family Excommunicated by Vatican

March 13th, 2009

This is the most disgusting thing I’ve heard the Catholic church do in a long time.

Archibishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho of the coastal city of Recife announced that the Vatican was excommunicating the family of a local girl who had been raped and impregnated with twins by her stepfather, because they had chosen to have the girl undergo an abortion.”

Now on top of everything the girl has gone throught she now has to deal with the belief that her loved ones will now be tortured in hell for eternity.  Not only is the Vatican going to excommunicate the family of the poor girl but also all the doctors and the staff that had anything to do with the abortion. An abortion that was legal in Brazil since it is a clear case of rape and medically necessary to save the life of the girl whose frame is too small to support carrying one child much less twins.

What is even more crazy is that the stepfather that raped the girl is not being excommunicated. I think it is quite pathetic that the Catholic church is using this poor girls tragedy to make a political statement about abortion.  One would think that covering up the buggering of young boys by priests would be the lowest the church could sink to but leave it to the Catholics to take classlessness and repulsiveness to a new level.   The only thing positive that could come out of this is if the little girl and others realize how petty and irrational the Catholic church’s views are and turn there back on this pathetic ideology.

I think if your Catholic and you hear of this story and at the very least fail to write your bishop letting him know your disgust with how this case has been handled, then you are no different than the stepfather and if you have a daughter your scum and a sorry parent.  This is rediculous and not speaking out on it is shameful.

Thank you for bringing this up. I agree with you 100%. This is something that I’ve ranted about myself many times over — not specifically about ex-communication, but just the way the Christian Church (in all its different breeds) causes people to live in absolute terror that they’re going to burn in hell, often when they themselves are victims. And when the person being tormented is a CHILD, then it is nothing short of CHILD ABUSE. (If I sound angry, it’s because I am.)

Here’s something I talk about in my book: I live in Cincinnati and a couple years ago a woman had to go through the horror of losing her husband through a violent murder. The police managed to find the murderer; he was tried, found guilty, and sent to jail. The newspaper interviewed the woman and she said that she knows she has to FORGIVE the murderer or she’ll go to HELL and that she was having trouble doing so!

And in this screwed up theology, the murderer, of course, just has to ask their god for forgiveness, and he’s home free. He’s forgiven and gets to go to Heaven.

And thus the woman is not only the victim, but believes she is the evil one who is ultimately going to be punished by god for the murderer’s horrible acts.

The leaders of the church should be ashamed of themselves for doing this to people. I’m glad I got out, and I hope that others are able to find the strength to do the same.
